THE SIX DIMENSIONS

What intercultural coaching competence really comes down to

Intercultural effectiveness is not a „soft skill" but a learnable set of six capabilities — from self-awareness to coaching ethics. We measure all of them:

1.

Cultural Self-Awareness

How well do you recognise when your own conditioning is shaping your perception?
2.

Cultural Knowledge & Differentiation

How reliably do you distinguish cultural patterns from individual traits?
3.

Communication & Trust

How effectively do you build trust across cultural boundaries?
4.

Global Mobility

How deeply do you accompany coachees through international transitions?
5.

Generations & Diversity

How clearly do you understand generational tensions beyond the clichés?
6.

Coaching Mindset & Ethics

How robust is your stance in non-Western coaching contexts?

How culturally aware are you really when coaching and leading?

Intercultural coaching and leadership competence is no longer an optional soft skill. It has become a core driver of effectiveness in a globally connected world of work. Anyone who works with international teams, accompanies expatriates, or leads across generations needs more than country-specific knowledge: they need the ability to recognise their own cultural conditioning, to make sense of differences without resorting to stereotypes, and to build sustainable relationships across cultural boundaries.

This self-assessment is designed as a reflection tool, not as psychometric diagnostics. It structures your self-evaluation along six dimensions of intercultural coaching competence. The dimensions are derived from current international research: the Cultural Intelligence model (Ang and Van Dyne), the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (Bennett, Hammer), the Culture Map research (Meyer), the GLOBE studies, as well as the ICF Core Competencies and the EMCC Global Code of Ethics.

Please answer spontaneously and honestly. There are no right or wrong answers. The tool only works well if you describe yourself as you actually are today, not as you would like to be. Plan around 12 minutes. Four statements are formulated as practice scenarios — they require slightly more reading time than the other items.

1. I am aware that my own cultural conditioning shapes how I interpret other people's behaviour.

Reflection

2. I can name the dimensions in which cultures systematically differ (e.g. communication style, understanding of hierarchy, relationship to time).

Knowledge

3. I deliberately adapt my communication style when working with people from different cultures.

Relationship

4. I understand that international transitions are not only organisational but also identity-related processes.

Transitions

5. I see generational differences as cultural conditioning, not as fixed character traits.
